Life in Dusseldorf

Aside from underestimating the power of jetlag, my first week in Europe ran quite smooth. I spent two days in Belgium emersing myself into the European culture before I met my host family (the Lierenfelds). Familie Lierenfeld consists of Petra, Toni, their daughter Laura, and last but not least Leika the dog. Although Toni does not speak any English, he is very easy to hang out with. I often walk the dog with him, as he teaches me new German words. He is a proud Dusseldorf citizen as well, and displays his pride by constantly offering me dark beer from Dusseldorf, and reminding me that he thinks beer from Cologne (Köln) is “pee pee”. I have not met Laura, but she will be home from the UK on Thursday.

In terms of travelling, I spent my first weekend in Amsterdam witnessing the various cultures that migrated to Amsterdam, and doing a little bit of “window shopping” (no actual shopping took place). The Van Gogh museum displayed some nice art, however it did not have some of the more well known pieces of art, such as Starry Night.
