mastering the smile and nod...

The first few days with the host family have been very interesting to say the least. The family, aside from the daughter who lives across town, does not speak any English at all, which leads to some awkward moments when were at the dinner table. A lot of times the mom says something to us and just waits for a response or some indication that we know what she is trying to tell us, so theres jsut a long blank stare before one of us finally can't take it anymore and just smile and nod. Having said that it is quite strange trying to communicate with our host family, I must also say that they are extremely generous to us both. Kyle and I have been eating like kings for breakfest and dinner both. The mom leaves for work at 5:45 every morning, but sets us up a huge breakfast before she leaves and does our laundry almost every day so far when she gets home and then leaves it folded on our beds.
We went to watch the Germany vs. Italy game in town the other night and the atmosphere was absolutely unparalleled to anything I have personally seen for a sporting event (and yes this includes all the hoopla over our marginal football team back home, even when we play texas). There were several thousand people in the streets cheering for Germany, and it was fun to watch a game with people who care so much about the game given that it is such a rarity in the US. Getting home after the game was quite the adventure and between the randomly getting on a train that wasnt scheduled to stop where we were, going the wrong way, and running between stops for appearently no reason, I still don't really know how we made it back to the house.
