On the train to Prague right now has me thinking of how
fast time is flying by. We've already seen Salzburg and
Vienna and I feel like I could've spent a year there and
still not seen everything. Out of Salzburg and Vienna
I definitely favored Salzburg. It's a smaller city surrounded
by beautiful mountains and lots of green. Vienna
was beautiful but it was way too big of a city for
me. I also feel like there wasn't very many places in
Vienna where you could find a little spot of grass to
relax on. I love nature and being in Salzburg with its
mountains and valleys and river just really spoke to
me. It's a place I see myself coming back to as soon
as I can.
While in Vienna we went on a medical history walk and
saw the catacombs in St. Michael's church on the first
day. The medical history walk was very interesting and
had to do a lot with Vienna during the time of the plague.
We had to take "medicines" to make sure we didn't
"catch the plague" and I actually drank white wine vinegar.
I'm pretty sure it was the grossest thing I've ever drank.
My favorite medicine was "theriac" which was actually
Haribo peache candy. It was delicious and I'm going
to go buy some when we get back to Bonn. The
catacombs in St. Michael's were awesome and a little creepy
at the same time. St Michaels is one of the oldest churches in
Vienna and has around 4,000 corpses. They keep it really cold
in there to preserve the corpses so I was freezing and it made
the experience a little more eerie. Some of the coffins we
saw were still adorned with the original paint of the time
and there were even some mummified corpses we got
to see. They all had their original clothing on and even
though it was some what decayed it still felt like you
were taking a leap back in time.
On the second day in Vienna we went to the Josephinum.
The Josephinum houses the famous collection of anatomical
and obstetrical wax models by Emperor Joseph II. These
wax models were made between the years 1784 and 1788
and were so amazing to look at. I would love to take anatomy
in Vienna because studying these models would help so much.
Later that night we went to a classical music concert in St.
Anna's church and it was beautiful. It was the perfect amount
of time to really enjoy the music but not get to tired from sitting
still. The church was also such a beautiful setting for
the concert.
On The last full day in Vienna we took a tour of the
Historical Natural Museum that was only an hour long,
which was way too short. I could've spent all day in
that museum. It reminded me of the butterfly museum in
Houston a little bit, but it was cooler because it was in
Vienna and in a magnificent older building. We had a
delicious lunch at a place on the unviseristy of Wien
campus. I had a burger and apple juice spritzer and
it was soo good. After lunch we headed to the Narrenturm
which is the Federal Pathological anatomical museum.
It used to hold patients that were "mad" or "insane". The
building was the first psychiatric hospital and was then
closed in 1866. While there we actually got to go into the
rooms where the patients were kept and it was not what
I would have imagined. There were windows in each
room that could be opened and it was an average sized
room for the time. We were also told patients could
wander around within the building and courtyard but
just could not leave. We did not get to go on the floor
where they kept the craziest individuals or any of the
electric therapy equipment which was a little disappointing.
Overall though it was a very interesting and informative tour.
Today we checked out of the hotel and went to see the
house were Sigmund Freud lived for 50 years. There
was not very many of Freuds belongs there, but there
were a lot of pictures. After going through the house
we went into the basement which was made into a
lecture hall and Dr. Wasser lectured us on Freud's history.
I really enjoyed this lecture but psychology is a very
interesting subject. It was even more interesting knowing
that the stuff he was talking about happened right above
where we were sitting.
I am now on a train to Prague and I can not wait to see
what the rest of this trip has in store for me. I really do
think someone is going to have to force me to leave
Europe, because I don't know how people can leave on
their own free will...
