Since my
last blog, we traveled back to cologne for a city tour and a rooftop tour of
the cathedral. During the city tour, the guide showed us where the old Roman
city was, including the outer walls and some buildings, which was interesting.
Unfortunately, the tour guide did not show for the rooftop tour so we climbed
up 533 steps to the top of the cathedral, which was definitely worth it.
We traveled to Salzburg for our first free
weekend. On Saturday morning, we went paragliding off a mountain on the edge of
the city. The views were incredible; I could see both the city and the Austrian
Alps while in the air. The pilot also let me take control of the parachute and
do a few turns, which was pretty cool. However, my favorite part was doing all
the g-force turns. When we got back from paragliding we went up to the Salzburg
fortress. From the watchtower you could see the river running through the city
on one side and the Alps on the other. I can’t really describe how great the
view was so I’ll just attach a picture. On Sunday we went canyoning. Basically,
we just worked our way down an canyon-like river basin in the mountains by
rappelling down waterfalls, jumping off cliffs, swimming, hiking, and sliding
down the shallow rocky parts of the river, it was even more fun than it sounds.
On Monday morning we got up bright
and early to go to Vienna and did a medical history walk through the city.
During the tour, Dr. Wasser talked about the plague in Vienna, giving us some
of the “medicine” they used to take to prevent catching the plague. I thought I
was going to die after drinking the white wine vinegar. Later that day we went
to the catacombs under St. Michael’s church.
