Week 3 - Tiny Island to Big City

I am currently on my way back to Bonn after being gone for almost a week! We traveled as a program to Norderney, one of the Frisian Islands in the North Sea. I didn’t know what to expect from the trip but I was beyond amazed by the tiny island. There are very few cars on the island, so we biked everywhere that we went (my lack of recent biking became very obvious) and it made the trip that much more memorable. Every night, we all got to hangout on the beach and had the best time doing so.
We spent a day at the Badehaus, where we swam in salt waters pools, experienced a mud treatment, and sat in different saunas. Cassidy and I even fell asleep and had to be woken up to leave. It was so enjoyable and relaxing that I almost convinced myself to go back the next day, but instead I bought some of the mud to bring the Badehaus back home to Texas.
Another awesome experience was our mud flat hike during the low tide, despite the cold weather and my lack of warm clothing. We followed a guide out onto the flats and hiked through thick mud while learning about the biodiversity present there. Once we reached the open ocean, the tide started coming back in and we could see it filling in the flat. This was such a unique experience and one that I will never forget.
After Norderney, a group of friends and I traveled to Amsterdam for the weekend. It was quite the difference going from the tiny island of Norderney to this huge and vibrant city. We stayed in the coolest hostel and toured the entire city on foot (which we realized was much bigger than we thought). Hands down my favorite activity was visiting the Anne Frank Haus. I have always been intrigued by the Holocaust and I absolutely loved learning about her story. We also ate great food, visited the Van Gogh Museum, and went on the most fun canal cruise. Amsterdam was definitely full of surprises, laughs, and new adventures. I am excited to spend this upcoming week in Bonn and catching up on some much needed sleep!
