Viva Las Ramblas and my new found tour guide profession

Week two was one of the best weeks ever!!! First we learned about comparative health care and it was SO interesting!!! I want to eventually work in health policy or work for the World Health Organization, so hearing about superior (sorry America) health care systems had me hooked. We also “broke a sweat” learning all about Sauna’s and on our trip to Cologne. The city was one of the coolest things I’ve seen! The cathedral is absolutely beautiful. Most of us even stayed there eating Thai food and definitely lived up to the crazy American stereotype. The next few days were bittersweet having the last German class with Hilde but I’m so thankful that I was actually able to learn some!!

At the end of the week, seven(this number came up so many times) of us hopped on a flight to my absolute FAVORITE city in the world and my actual home away from home, Barcelona. Land of tapas, sangria and the cheetah girls!!! After living here for a whole summer I was extremely excited to become a tour guide for my fellow travelers and show them everything there is to love about the city! We started with getting to our Airbnb right across the street from Camp Nou and sorry Kyle field, but this place was much bigger.

We went to Milk, a FANTASTIC brunch place, las ramblas, saw la boqueria (one of the biggest markets in the world) and Passeig de Gràcia. I got to show them some of the history behind Gaudí’s Casa Batllo and Casa Mila and take them to my favorite cafe!!! We then got to walk along the beach, take in the sites of the sand from the Sahara and dip our feet in the EXTREMELY cold water. We then ended up walking to Bo de B, one of the best €4 sandwiches you could ever get your hands on!!! I later even got to take them to the Font de Canaletes, where legend has it that if you drink the water from it, you will return to Barcelona again. (It obviously worked for me because I came back pretty fast!)
After splitting our group up, some of us ended up at the MNAC (if you’ve seen cheetah girls 2 you’ll recognize the view) and Olimpic Park!! After that we met up for some tapas and paella, got to see my friend Olha again, and had a very interesting night on the town filled with stock market crashes, flames, British accents and losing my pack of gum.

The next day we got a late start and went to El Rincon de la Abuela Venezolana, and ate some of my favorite food, Arepas and Tequeños. I had to translate and order for everyone in Spanish! We then got to see the STUNNING Sagrada Familia, which is beautiful even from the outside. We were serenaded by Jen’s rendition of “Viva Las Vegas”, went to Park de la Ciutadella and of course, back to the beach. After getting caught in some lovely rain we trekked to get some fantastic churros and chocolate, more souvenirs and then the restaurant I miss the most, Macchina. It’s like chipotle or subway for pasta. And let me tell you, it’s the best thing you’ll ever eat.

The next day we woke up very early and RAN (strut like you mean it) to Park Güell took some pics and quickly escorted our friends off to the metro for the airport. We had some more time, so we met another friend of Stones for lunch, took pics with the Sagrada Familia and then, you guessed it, back to the beach. Being able to sit and enjoy the ocean breeze and the sun was a great end to the trip.

As I wrote this I was sitting on my flight delayed by two hours, due to some crazy weather but I’m looking forward to what the rest of the weeks hold!!

Here’s to siete, speaking in Spanish, front walkovers, the beautiful beach and turbulence!

Te amo Barça, Te veo pronto.
