Meeting Our Host Family

Today was a really big day! We finally got to meet our host family! Ursula, our host mother, and Dirk, her son-in-law, came to pick us up at the AIB after our plane arrived. It was kind of overwhelming, because we were getting into the car with strange people, who weren't even native English speakers! The ride home was a little awkward, just because Dirk kept asking us weird questions about America and Texas. He also wanted to know what we knew about Germany... sadly, Kristen and I could only tell him a few facts about World War II and the Holocaust. I felt really bad.

Once at the house, things got better. Their house is adorable! Dirk, Steffi, and Saskia (their daughter) live in one half of the house. Uschi (as she wants us to call her) lives in the other half. Our bedroom is on Uschi's side, and is really spacious and cute! We have two twin beds with pink comforters. After touring the house, Uschi set about cooking dinner. They were going to barbeque!

Dinner was really great. We had grilled pork and turkey, sausages, fried potatoes, and bread. Conversation was a little strained, but we expected that. We gave them the gifts that we brought from Texas, and they loved them! We were sad that Saskia wasn't there though. She will be at church camp for the next two weeks! Sad! We had ice cream for dessert, and then helped with the dishes. It was a slightly stessful day, but as Dr. Wasser says, "It's all part of the experience!"
