Köln, Koblenz, and Canceled Trains

Week three.
We were back in Bonn and let me tell ya, it was nice being back. Having Monday off was very relaxing and great to catch up on a little work and sleep. Kathryn and I grabbed lunch at a little cafe that day. It turned out to be pretty funny because when the waiter was taking our order, Kathryn ordered what she thought was an iced coffee. When he returned he brought out a coffee with ice cream in it. The two of us then walked over to Starbucks, where we met with Carter, Gabe, Alana, and Juliette. We attempted to work on our blogs and plan out the rest of our weekend trips. What actually happened was we could not stay focused on our work and talked the whole time.
Tuesday we were back to class. We started the morning off early with our last German class, which was actually kind of sad because Hilde is wonderful. We continued our lectures in Nuerophysiology of Music and History of Medicine, which have both been very interesting. The next day we left for Köln. We toured both the Cologne Cathedral and the Roman Museum. We were able to see a lot of the fine jewelry crafted centuries ago. I especially thought this golden ivy crown was beautiful. It looks so delicate sitting in the case.

The bracelets and earrings were just as intricate and ornate in design. It is truly amazing to think how these pieces of jewelry, along with so many other items in the museum, were made with such detail centuries ago. Next, we got a tour ON TOP of the cathedral. OH MY. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. When we first went in, Dr. Wasser gave us a tour around the floor. He pointed out a beautiful gold box believed to hold the bones of the three magi that visited Jesus. Professor Waltz also shared about the acoustics of the space and how different sounds would be heard from different areas within. It was massive and everything in it was incredibly detailed. We then had an excellent tour guide who was very enthusiastic about the cathedral. You could really tell she loved it. We stopped a couple of times at lower heights to see the stained glass, organ, and the flying buttresses. All of which made the cathedral exceptionally beautiful. Once we mad sit to the top, I was once again amazed at how spectacular the view was. You could see for miles and miles.

Following the tour, we ate some of the best gelato I've tasted yet, then headed back to Bonn. The next morning we made our way to Koblenz to see the Theater Koblenz and fortress. The theatre was not quite what I was expecting, but it was great to learn about and visit, nonetheless. Our tour guide was excellent and Professor Waltz even sung. He was great, especially since he has not sung in about 10 years! Next, we took a gondola up to the fortress. The fort was very neat to walk around, even though I couldn't quite understand what the guide was saying the entire time. It was so much larger than I expected and we didn't even see everything. When I got back to my host family's house, I had dinner with them and about 15 of their friends. We ate and talked a lot and just enjoyed each others' company. Friday we had class, then it was time for Henning's concert. Our AIB coordinator is a rockstar, how cool is that?! Everybody at the festival seemed to know every single word of his band's songs. It was a super cool experience. This week in Bonn has been wonderful, but a weekend in Brussels is calling my name!
