It’s already week two! This study abroad is already going by so fast with all of the fun activities that we have been doing. This week in class, we learned about how the healthcare system in Germany compares to systems in other countries, including the US. I have always found this topic fascinating, especially in light of all the recent debates surrounding the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. I took a class last semester about health systems planning and it surprised me that the US is the only wealthy, developed country that doesn’t have universal health care, but I never really understood why that was the case, so I enjoyed looking at the topic from the history of medicine perspective this week. We also started our pharmacology class, and I liked the discussion based learning style that Dr. Fajt uses to teach the material. We are taking more of a big picture perspective on pharmacology, learning about drugs in general, instead of memorizing information about specific drugs.
Cologne |
On Wednesday, we went to Cologne and got to see some cool animals at the zoo! Unfortunately all the racoons had escaped, so I’ll just have to wait to get back to Texas to see those. After the program activities ended, we went to a brewery for Kölsch, Cologne’s local beer. We quickly learned that if when you have had enough beer, you have to put your coaster on top of the glass or else they will keep bringing you more!
Viktualienmarkt |
This weekend, I went to Munich via an overnight bus. The bus ride was not as bad as I had expected, and I actually did get some sleep (shout out to melatonin for that). After we stowed our luggage at our Airbnb, we headed over to the Viktualienmarkt, a lively market full of flowers, food, and souvenirs. We had a full day of sightseeing, and if you google “best things to do in Munich,” we probably did most of them. One of the highlights was going to the Hofbrauhaus and sharing massive pretzels and the classic liter of beer.
