Weekend 5 was another huge success. It began in Köln where we went to the zoo and saw all sorts of animals. We were taken "backstage" and were able to pet elephants.
After the zoo we headed off to the Black Forest and somehow caught all 4
train connections. We made it to a tiny village named Oppenau in southwest
Germany around 9pm. We had booked a place with AirBnB and it ended up being some families home
and they were out of town. I suppose a toddlers 4-foot-long crib counts as a
bed and somehow I ended up with it.
On Saturday we packed our backpacks and headed off into the
forest. We hiked for 4 or 5 miles before arriving at All-Saints waterfall. The
water fall was ridiculously big. It was over 900 meters in height separated into
7 or 8 individual “falls”. At the top of the waterfall we found a WWI memorial
and a little restaurant where we had a drink before heading back to town. As we
made our way back to town we realized we had missed the last bus of the night…
Luckily for us, some locals pulled over and offered us a ride.
Sunday we relaxed at our AirBnB and just enjoyed being out
in the wilderness. It was so nice to get away from the big cities for a
weekend.
