After leaving the overwhelming metropolis of Berlin, we were
allowed to choose where to go for our free weekend. A group of us traveled to
Munich and it may have been the best time of the trip. Possibly the most
interesting thing I did abroad was go to the Dachou concentration camp. It was
a depressing but fascinating look into what humans are capable of. Like a
horrific car wreck it was impossible to look away. The air was freezing and
damp and a dreary fog hung over the camp, perfect weather for a place with such
a dark history.
After being thoroughly depressed by Dachou, we went a couple
of the Bavarian Beer Halls. The drinks came in liter mugs and the food was delicious.
All in all that Saturday was my favorite. Sunday we walked through the city
which was unfortunately pretty dead. All the shops close on Sunday so it was
much more of a sightseeing walk than anything else. We did go to the Bayern
Munich soccer stadium which was a very unique piece of architecture. We went to
a gift shop and I bought a soccer scarf for a team I know nothing about. Soccer
is a big deal over here so hopefully I don’t get into any fights.
