I’m so sad that it’s halfway over, but week 3 of my study abroad was one I will never forget! As a class, we got to visit the North Sea spa island of Norderney, and over the weekend, I celebrated my birthday in Rome!
In Norderney, we got to visit the beach and the island’s badehaus and immerse ourselves in what the Germans call Thalasso (health from the sea). The spa had a number of different treatments, saunas, and pools that you could take part of to just completely relax yourself, which is just what we needed after our constant traveling and running around. My favorites were the salt water floating pool and the high pressure 6 meter tall shower. On the island, I got to perfect my biking skills, which hadn’t been untapped since the beginning of 6th grade, and while it was tiring, I loved being able to see all of Norderney that way. On our third day in Norderney we travelled to the mud flat which was.......definitely an experience. I’m sure it would have been a wonderful experience if it wasn’t for the constant downpour of rain the entire time we were there. So after the mud flats, we made sure to get another visit in at the Badehaus to refresh ourselves. The next day, we ate at a really great restaurant where I had some of the best veal I have ever had, and then we headed back to Bonn!
Then, we headed out on our excusion to Rome, which has to be my favorite place I’ve visited so far. Everywhere I looked, there was something new and breathtaking that I could have never seen anywhere else. On our first day, we toured the Colosseum, which was such a great start on our trip in one of the most historical cities in the world. We even saw an A&M engraving on one of the pillars! The next day, we visited Vatican City, which included the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica. All of these building were absolutely mind blowing. I think the Basilica is the most beautiful building I’ve ever seen in my life. On Sunday, we saw the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain. I learned that if you throw a coin into the fountain, you have to make sure to do it behind your back and over your left shoulder, and it would ensure that you would come back to Rome soon! Then, that night, we had an amazing dinner at a rooftop restaurant which had gorgeous sunset views of the city. On Sunday, we finally ate a good homemade Italian pasta meal and a cute, family-owned restaurant near the Pantheon, where I had the best lasagna I had ever eaten.
Overall, while I was exciting to be able to return to Bonn and have time to relax, I’m going to miss Rome so much. I pray that my coin toss in the Trevi Fountain pays out, because I can’t wait to go back to Rome, and have the opportunity to visit the rest of Italy! Visiting Norderney and Rome in the same week was tiring, but so exciting. I got to see and experience two drastically different parts of Europe, and I was able to get so much out of both of them. Like I’ve said in my previous posts, I couldn’t be more upset that all of this journey is going by so quickly, but I am so thankful that I am
able to get to travel like this and for everyone who has helped me get to do so.
