The continuing adventures of a clueless American

Another week in Germany has passed and oh boy was it a busy one. So as with last week I’m going to break it down day by day starting with where I left off, Sunday afternoon

Sunday cont. Not really much to report here aside from Blake, Shane, myself and some others going to a German public pool. Water felt good as it was unusually hot, but the German kids kept splashing us because they didn’t know how else to internet with us. Idk I’m not really in tune with kids. Anyways Blake and I ate Dönner which is always good then Wolli (not Wally) made some BBQ and we ate that with a beer. Low key day, was very nice.

Monday. Poor Dr Waltz, we had a very informative lecture in the morning about acoustics that was geared toward us going to an opera house and getting to play with acoustics….this didn’t go as planned. The visit for the day was Koblenz and after an hour on the train that was 20 minutes late we were sent out to get lunch. Blake, Shane, Logan and I got some dope pizza. Logan and I split a Salami people like sensible people while the other ya idiots committed a crime against humanity by getting pineapple on the pizza. Afterwards we toured the opera house which was cool, but we didn’t get to play with acoustics since they were preparing for a show that night. After we went to visit Ehrenbreitstein Fortress which has a cool acoustical room, only they thought our group was too big so we didn’t get to go in. I genuinely felt bad that Dr Waltz’s plans got scrubbed by no fault of his own. The boys and I explored the fort and learned a bit of history.

Finished the day by taking the train back to Bonn and eating some sort of chicken dish, idk it was a long (but fun) day.

Tuesday: Learned some German and some history of medicine with Wasser. Outside of a day of learning only noteworthy incident was I had a Baurnwurst XL for lunch and it smacked.

Wednesday: Waltz’s streak of bad luck continues as we have two very informative and interesting lectures before our visit to Cologne. After lunch at a brewery in which I wasn’t allowed to drink (sad) we toured the city. The cathedral was beautiful, but we didn’t get to go inside and listen to the acoustics (poor Waltz). Cologne is dope tho and the people are more relaxed than other Germans.
Cologne cathedral is black due to pollution and smoke from burning buildings after the US bombed the railroad 500 meters away (didn’t hit the church)

Thursday: class from 9-5, long day but worth it. Wasser taught us about the German eugenics programs of WW2 since it was D-Day +75 years. Very sad, but interesting stuff. Last night with host family until after Dublin, was tired tho so didn’t say much which I’ll probably regret.

Friday: Pre-Norderney day. Since we’re taking a sauna on Norderney next week, Wasser lectures us about the use, history and health impact of sauna. Interesting, but my main take away was the “Baby Break a Sweat” song he intro’d with. After that Blake, me, Bridgette, Kim and Maddie loafed by on a bus along with another group and headed to Brussels. Our hostel was out in the Belgian country a ways, but was very pretty. After wandering around for about an hour on food I think he wind and spotty rain our host family took pity and made us pasta and gave us beer and wine. The pasta was made by the host mom’s husband who is from Italy so as you can imagine it was very good. That was all we did Friday

Saturday: I’ll keep it brief and let the pictures talk. Waffles, Grand Place, train, Brugge, train, dinner, back to air bnb.
Belgian waffles are hella good y’all. Bought them out of a small shop after a super helpful Belgian directing us there. Waffles with fresh strawberries, strawberry syrup and plenty of whipped cream
Grand Place: So much gold and history in one place, it may have been windy and kinda cold, but one definitely can feel the weight of history and the majesty of the place.
Brussels group
Brugge: Basically it’s north of Brussels, a canal city which lots of historic and very impressive buildings including a cathedral and an old hospital. Gonna be honest, it was pretty and the buildings were impressive but I don’t know any of the history or even what stuff was. There’s just too much to see and do
Dinner back in Brussels at a bistro. Spaghetti and a Belgian beer that’s been brewed since the 1100s (originally by monks)

Sunday pt.1 Brussels again. Finally got a Stella in the Grand Place then went and looked around. Ended up on a hill overlooking the city where an old cathedral was seated. Pretty neat day.
Yes, Stella is very good
This weekend was great, but we did a lot, saw a lot and traveled a lot. I’m hoping the pictures give a better idea of what I did than writing a huge essay.
Cheers to the air bnb squad (Maddie, Kim, Bridgette, Blake, ya boi)
